Nevill’s Dock & Railway Company
Llanelli had a network of industrial lines that connected many local
works carrying the products of heavy industry across the town and
centred on the Copperworks Dock, The lines were most visible as
they ran through the streets of Seaside and the Wern.
This third book tells the story of the Llanelly Railway & Dock Company that could claim its origins to before Queen Victoria began her long reign. After a modest beginning with a short line from their New Dock at Llanelli to the village of Dafen the Company set sights on the coalfield in the Amman Valley. They built their line first to Ammanford and on to Garnant, Brynamman and Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen. From Pantyffynnon the main line ran to Llandeilo where they also ran the trains for the Vale of Towy Railway to Llandovery. New lines opened from Llandeilo to Carmarthen through Nantgaredig and Abergwili and from Pontardulais to Swansea (Victoria) via the Dunvant valley with a branch to Penclawdd.
After years operating in isolation the Company had to deal with the conflict that arose when the larger South Wales Railway and LNWR came on the scene, and the inevitable financial troubles, all with a surprising outcome.
Photographs, maps and drawings help illustrate the story of a railway company that built the southern part of the Heart of Wales Line on which we can still travel in the 21st century.
This comprehensive history looks in detail at the Company in its independent days before the LNWR and GWR took on the extensive network.
